Dez Bryant, Cowboys not worried about lost time

IRVING, Texas -- Dez Bryant went through his second full practice of the week with no issues related to a hamstring injury that kept him out of the four preseason games.

“It’s been good,” Bryant said. “Just out there doing what I love to do, play this game of football going up, catching it, high-fiving my teammates. You know just being out there and balling again.”

Before this week, Bryant practiced only a handful of times after tweaking his hamstring Aug. 6 while the Cowboys were in Oxnard, California, for training camp. The Cowboys were purposefully deliberate with his rehab with their sole intention getting ready for Sunday’s season opener against the New York Giants.

But Bryant and Tony Romo have not had much time on task since the Cowboys’ playoff loss last January to the Green Bay Packers because of his contractual situation in the spring and injury over the summer.

“We’re not trying to pick up where we left off, we hope to be better,” Romo said. “Obviously when you have more reps in preseason it can be a bonus. I think, at the same time, Dez has played the game long enough that he will understand how to approach this game. The way he’s going to go about it will be the right way.”

Bryant led the NFL in touchdown catches in 2014 with 16. He also had 88 catches for 1,320 yards and was named All-Pro for the first time while earning his second Pro Bowl berth

“I think the good thing with Tony and I is we know each other very well,” Bryant said. “We have a great relationship off the field. I think when you have that, that’s the best thing that you can ever have. I’m talking amongst players. Things become naturally easy whenever you have that kind of relationship. Me being gone, I wasn’t too frustrated, Romo wasn’t too frustrated. I jumped back in and we did what we normally do.”

According to Jason Witten, Bryant and Romo had no issues in Thursday’s practice.

“He worked hard these last few weeks and this week in practice, especially today,” Witten said. “Tony and him just really clicked. He has a great feel and there’s a lot of work that’s gone into putting him into situations to be successful. (He’s) one of the best to do it and we’re counting on him obviously.”

With limited time in the offseason and in the summer, can Bryant be dominant, starting Sunday?

“I think we all are not only hoping for that but know that’s going to happen,” Witten said. “That’s the way he prepares, that’s the way he’s played. He’s done it throughout an entire career, but as he’s developed as a player really just playing at a high level, being on the same communication lines as Tony and his ability to run and catch. Obviously nobody does it better going up to get the ball and when it’s in his hands, great things happen.”
