Jared Abbrederis could make long-awaited return to Packers

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Here's a twist to the Green Bay Packers' ever-changing receiver depth chart: Jared Abbrederis may return Tuesday for the final practice of training camp.

The former fifth-round pick hasn't been on the field since he sustained a concussion on July 30, the first day of camp.

Abbrederis' possible return comes on the day the Packers must pare their roster to 75 players. They were at 83 to start the day after general manager Ted Thompson cut five players on Monday. Another, linebacker Adrian Hubbard, tweeted on Tuesday that he was released.

McCarthy said it's possible the rest of the cuts will come after practice, and he made it sound like some of that is contingent on Abbrederis' status.

"That's one of the moving variables that we have in getting ready for 75 because obviously he hasn't practiced yet," McCarthy said.

Abbrederis hasn't even played in a preseason game since the Packers drafted him out of Wisconsin in 2014. He missed all of his rookie season because of a knee injury he sustained early last year in training camp.

With Jordy Nelson out for the season, the fifth (and likely final) receiver spot could come down to whether the Packers feel Abbrederis can contribute this season. In his absence, Myles White has moved into that No. 5 spot for now. White caught nine passes for 89 yards on Saturday against the Steelers.

Speaking of receivers, McCarthy said he had no update on Randall Cobb, who sprained his right shoulder in Saturday's game against the Steelers. A source on Sunday told ESPN that Cobb has a good chance to be ready for the regular-season opener on Sept. 13 against the Bears.

McCarthy also refused to provide updates on the four injured offensive linemen -- tackles David Bakhtiari (knee) and Bryan Bulaga (ankle) and guards T.J. Lang (concussion) and Josh Sitton (ankle) -- or defensive back Micah Hyde (neck).
