The Detroit Lions have supposedly been waiting two weeks for this moment, for the chance to hire San Diego offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.

Now, with the Chargers' 24-17 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night, Whisenhunt is officially available for hire for Detroit or Tennessee or Cleveland, the three teams he interviewed with this week.

For the past week, though, all signs and reports have pointed toward a union between Whisenhunt and the Lions, to where a week ago ESPN Insider and colleague Adam Schefter reported the job was Whisenhunt's to lose.

Whisenhunt's San Diego offense was a bit scattered Sunday afternoon. It didn't score for three quarters, then put up 17 points in the fourth quarter and only 259 yards of offense in the game. The 259 yards of offense were the lowest the Chargers had produced all season and only the third time this season San Diego did not reach at least 300 yards offensively.

As a reminder -- and something I wrote earlier Sunday -- don't judge Whisenhunt on what you might have watched in the divisional round game Sunday. Detroit -- as it should -- is likely looking at the body of work over a season and a career.

San Diego finished the regular season fifth in yards per game with 393.3, fourth in passing yards per game with 270.5 and 13th in rushing yards per game with 122.81. The Chargers were the best third down team in the NFL, converting at a 49 percent rate and first in time of possession, averaging 33 minutes, 35 seconds possessing the ball per game.

So what happens next? Now, officially, that is up to the Lions and Whisenhunt.
