Even though the Detroit Lions signed safety James Ihedigbo to pair with Glover Quin in the defensive backfield, it has never felt like this would deter the team from going after another safety fairly early in the draft, if possible.

Ihedigbo, who has familiarity with defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, turns 31 in December and feels more like a one-or-two year stopgap option for Detroit as it grooms its next safety to take his place. This could explain why the team has now brought in two safeties among its alloted pre-draft workout visits.

First was Ha Ha Clinton-Dix out of Alabama, a player considered perhaps the top safety in the draft and someone who could be available at No. 10. Then on Wednesday, the Lions brought in Deone Bucannon, a 6-foot-2 safety from Washington State, for a pre-draft visit.

Bucannon would not be a first-round target for Detroit, but could be someone the team would look at on the second day of the draft. He is listed by ESPN.com as the third-best safety in the draft and the No. 43 overall prospect. The only safeties listed ahead of him are Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor from Louisville.

Bucannon is 6-foot-1 and has an arm length of 32 3/8 inches -- both good for a safety. He isn't great in coverage and has 4.49 speed -- good, but not great. His 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump was the second best at the combine this year.
