Biggest remaining position battle: Washington

Fall camp rages on throughout the Pac-12. Throughout the week, we'll provide a team-by-team update of the biggest remaining position battle at each program throughout the conference. We continue by checking in with Washington.

Biggest remaining position battle: Quarterback

Importance: If it seems like we've been writing about quarterbacks a lot during this position battle series, well -- it's because we have! Veteran departures have led to plenty of upheaval at this key position in the Pac-12, and Washington is just the next team that must pick a new signal caller before the season opener.

The Huskies' situation might be the most challenging one to step into, as the majority of their offensive line is also new. It's a three-way race between junior Jeff Lindquist, redshirt freshman K.J. Carta-Samuels and true freshman Jake Browning.

Lindquist is the only one of that trio with game experience, while Carta-Samuels and Browning are talented, yet ultimately green. The Seattle Times' Adam Jude wrote that Browning has the most upside of the group, but Chris Petersen's willingness to play a true freshman -- especially in what looks like it might be a rebuilding season -- is unclear.

The coach is playing his cards close to the vest.

“They’re all pretty good,” Petersen told Jude about five days ago. “Nobody’s right where we need ’em to be. And I’m not saying that [to be evasive] — that’s the reality of the situation. They’re all doing a pretty good job, but I don’t think one has separated himself.”

The winner of this competition should have the benefit of playing alongside a stable of talented running backs, but plenty of offensive questions remain in Seattle after a topsy-turvy year on that side of the ball. The Huskies will demand that their 2015 quarterback bring stability to the offense.
