Kenny Mayne and crew were at internationally known Pike’s Peak Market as part of a video tour of Seattle when the SportsCenter anchor and Kent, Wash. native looked into the camera and said it would be “cliché” to start at such a tourist destination and walked off the set.

While that was scripted, their first stop profiling the city for a one-hour special on Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (NFL Featured: Russell Wilson, ESPN2 7 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. Sunday), was not. Upon landing at 10 p.m. PT Sunday, feature producer Barry Abrams received a text from Mayne suggesting the tour begin at Whole Foods, leaving Abrams scrambling eight hours later at the store getting clearance for the shoot.

“It made sense since it’s one of the places Kenny’s met Russell off the field,” Abrams said of the location choice. “But he also wanted a Whole Foods omelet for breakfast. That’s Kenny.”

While the focus of Friday’s show is Wilson — his quarterbacking days at Wisconsin, braving his father death while in college, surviving Gruden’s QB Camp, and his heart-warming connection with an 11-year old girl needing a heart transplant – the goal of feature producers Jon Fish and Abrams’ was to “make Seattle a character in the story.”

“Russell is such a big part of the community, and spreads so much good will in Seattle, we wanted to shoot all over the city and Kenny (figuratively) drove the bus on this one,” Abrams said. West coast videographer Jason Jobes, who is part of the MNF production crew, was along for the ride.

Along with blowing off the Market, the crew also eschewed shooting another seemingly obvious landmark — CenturyLink Field, Wilson’s home field — because the piece isn’t about the Seahawks, but about Wilson. Instead, they hoofed to Washington’s Husky Stadium because Wilson had offered mentoring services to Huskies’ quarterback Keith Price.
