DETROIT -- Ndamukong Suh is entering the final year of his contract in 2014 and Detroit Lions team president Tom Lewand said Wednesday he has expressed an interest to Suh that they would like to keep him here.

They haven’t, though, started to figure out any logistics on a new deal.

“I think with everything from a personnel standpoint, contract standpoint, the first thing is to begin to lay the groundwork for how we collectively see the team,” Lewand said Wednesday after the team announced Jim Caldwell as its head coach. “And be able to get Coach Caldwell’s input to that and be able to move forward in a way that has input from everybody involved and has a common vision. That’s the first order of business.”

Lewand said Suh and Caldwell met Wednesday as an introduction and that Dwight Freeney, who played for Caldwell in Indianapolis, had reached out to Suh to tell him about Caldwell as well.

Suh is scheduled to make $12.55 million next season, but his salary cap number is slated at $22.412 million -- one of three Lions with a cap number for more than $10 million for 2014 along with quarterback Matthew Stafford and receiver Calvin Johnson.

“We have tremendous respect for Ndamukong and I think we’ve expressed to him an interest in him being here and he’s expressed an interest in staying here,” Lewand said. “We’ll see where that takes us and what the timing of that is.

“But he stopped by today to see Coach Caldwell and I think he’s another guy who can benefit from the leadership that Jim is going to bring and the staff that he’s going to come up with.”
