Bucs' Bobby Rainey on bye week after a win: 'It kind of sucks'

TAMPA, Fla. -- Bobby Rainey is no fan of the upcoming bye week.

"It kind of sucks when you have this momentum and then you've got to stop," the Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back said Wednesday. "I'd rather just keep it going."

Ask around the Bucs' locker room, and you'll find a number of opinions about having Week 6 off.

Like Rainey, there are some who would rather see Tampa Bay (2-3) try to build on its victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5. Then there are others who have no problem with the down time.

"I think the bye week came at a perfect time," defensive tackle Gerald McCoy said. "If you go into the bye week with a win, regardless of the week, you don't mind it. Of course, [the Week 5 victory] energizes you. But you come to work the same, whether you win or lose. But after a win, definitely it brings a little extra energy."

The timing of the Bucs' bye week has varied in recent seasons. In 2010, they had Week 4 off. In 2011, it was Week 8. Then in 2012 and 2013, it was Week 5. Last year, it was Week 7.

Results coming off the bye week are mixed, as well. The Bucs are 2-3 since 2010 in the first game after a bye, with losses in each of the past two seasons. Tampa Bay resumes play against the Washington Redskins on Oct. 25 at FedEx Field.

Here's a sampling of the reaction about the Bucs' bye week:

Coach Lovie Smith: "It's always an exciting time to get to the bye week and have a chance to heal up. When we come back, we should get a lot more of our players that we counted on to be back on the football team then. It's always good to go into the bye on a win. Guys are feeling good about themselves."

Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter: "We've got momentum. I'd probably rather keep playing. But then the flip side of it is you can always use the time off, and we'll definitely get some guys back. I don't how many, but we'll definitely get some guys back. Every one of the guys that we have out, we'll take advantage of whoever we can get back. ... I look over there, sometimes, on the bench and see a lot of good players in offensive jerseys sitting over there. So we want to get them all back."

Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier: "This is one of those things you have no control over. And for us, it comes at a good time. It gives a chance to get some guys who are banged up healed up. And then you get ready to push, to sprint the rest of the way. But it comes at a good time for us."

Quarterback Jameis Winston: "I take what they give me. Every week, my main goal is to get better. So it doesn't matter. I feel the guys need a break. We've got some banged-up guys. Hopefully, we can get some guys back."

Rookie guard Ali Marpet: "Right now, it's been a lot of football. I don't know how many months it has been -- nine or something like that [with draft preparation]. ... It's good to have mental breaks, then come back and work."
