Dolphins currently hold No. 12 pick in NFL draft

The Miami Dolphins would have the No. 12 overall pick in the NFL draft if the season ended at this point, according to ESPN Stats & Information. With four games left in the regular season, Miami (5-7) has a chance to move up or down the draft board based on wins and losses in the final month of the season.

There are six teams, including the Dolphins, currently at 5-7. The New York Giants are the top 5-7 team and one spot ahead of the Dolphins at No. 11 overall due to the strength of schedule tiebreaker. Miami will host the Giants next week on Monday Night Football.

New York is still fighting for a playoff spot and an NFC East division title. Meanwhile, the Dolphins are essentially out of the postseason race in the AFC and have relegated themselves to the spoiler role. The loser of Monday's game will be in solid position to land a top-10 pick with three games remaining.

With the playoffs virtually out of reach, many Dolphins fans have expressed on social media that they would prefer the team not to win down the stretch. Each victory, such as last week's win over the Baltimore Ravens (4-8), puts Miami further behind in the draft order and makes it more difficult for it to land an elite prospect in the first round.

The Dolphins have plenty of holes to fix and a tight salary cap in 2016. That's not a good combination. A good draft next year will be the best and most efficient way for Miami to address those needs.
