Meet Tyler Ervin, the hair-cutting rookie RB who gets Arian Foster's number

HOUSTON -- Two months removed from Arian Foster's release, the Texans have a new No. 23.

Running back Tyler Ervin, a fourth-round pick last week, will wear the number, the team announced.

Foster became the third Texans player to wear the number back in 2010. He followed cornerback Dunta Robinson and safety Kevin Williams. It's no stretch to say Foster is the most famous and most successful 23 for the Texans. He became a four-time Pro Bowl selection wearing that number. In it, he won the rushing title once and twice had the most rushing touchdowns in the NFL.

With a spate of injuries in the past three seasons, Foster's effectiveness diminished and the Texans released him on March 3.

Enter, Ervin.

Here are five things to know about the Texans' new No. 23:

  1. Ervin was exceptionally versatile at San Jose State. He scored touchdowns rushing, receiving, returning kicks and returning punts. He lined up as a running back, slot receiver and cornerback, and also served as a return specialist and on special teams coverage units. He had 1,601 rushing yards last season with 13 touchdowns on 294 carries. He also caught 45 passes for 334 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

  2. While in high school, Ervin got a hankering to learn how to cut hair. He bought a pair of clippers from Walmart for $12. His first client was his 4-year-old nephew -- he didn't want to try it on himself and mess up his own hair. From there his skills as a barber grew and he has a few dozen clients. He'll be looking for new subjects among his teammates here.

  3. One of the running backs invited to the NFL scouting combine, Ervin performed well in several drills. He was the second fastest running back, with a 40-yard dash time of 4.41 seconds. His vertical and broad jump also were the second best among running backs at the combine.

  4. The Texans grew interested in Ervin due to a private workout in California. "I got a chance to meet the running back coach (Charles London), great guy," Ervin said. "And I’m just really excited because it’s one of those times where you kind of see something coming to fruition and like I said, I’m just really excited."

  5. Ervin is the youngest of four siblings. He has one brother who actually lives in the Houston area. "I had a chance to talk to him right after the pick," Ervin said. "He’s like, ‘Man, what are the chances of this happening?’ So me and him will have a chance to be around each other more often and see each other. I’m really happy about that.” It might even help him build a new client base as a barber.
