Terps G Dion Wiley expected to miss season after knee surgery

Maryland sophomore guard Dion Wiley underwent surgery to repair a torn right meniscus on Tuesday and is expected to miss the entire 2015-16 season.

The school released a statement that Wiley is expected to be out for four months -- a schedule that would take him to mid-March.

"It's extremely unlikely he plays this season," one source in the Terps program told ESPN.

"I am really disappointed for Dion because he worked so hard in the offseason and was playing at a very high level," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said in the statement. "This is a big loss for our team as Dion was expected to be our starting shooting guard. Our doctors were encouraged about the surgery and we know that Dion will work tirelessly to return to the court."

The 6-foot-4 Wiley averaged 4.1 points per game last season but was expected to battle Duke transfer Rasheed Sulaimon and 6-7 sophomore Jared Nickens for minutes at shooting guard. Turgeon told ESPN that Sulaimon recently volunteered to come off the bench, and that could still be the case with Nickens moving into the starting lineup. Nickens started nine games last season as a freshman and shot 39 percent from beyond the arc.

Maryland is ranked third in the country in the preseason Associated Press poll and opens the season Friday at home against Mount St. Mary's.
