SEC Week 6 bowl projections: Florida closing in on New Year's Six bowl

For once, we didn’t see a lot of change at the top this week. LSU remains the SEC’s best team and the league’s lone projected participant for the College Football Playoff with a 45-24 win over South Carolina on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Alabama rallied late to knock off Arkansas, setting up a top-10 showdown next week against Texas A&M. Both teams are currently projected to play in New Year’s Six bowl games. And Florida is on the outside looking in despite handling its business at Missouri, but the unbeaten Gators could make a big jump next week with a trip to LSU.

In the next tier, the middle category of bowl games, Ole Miss leads the way and is currently slotted for the Outback Bowl. At this point, the 5-1 Rebels are the only other SEC team that could conceivably still make a push for the playoff if they were to win out.

Georgia and Tennessee are both projected to play in one of those middle-tier bowl games, but in one game, the Bulldogs took a major hit Saturday while the Volunteers might have saved their season.

And bringing up the rear for the second straight week are Arkansas and Auburn. We still believe they will get to six wins and play in a bowl game, but both are on thin ice. Auburn faces a likely must-win scenario Thursday when the Tigers travel to Kentucky. A loss in that game and the possibility of missing the postseason becomes real for Gus Malzahn and his team.

But enough talk. Here are this week’s bowl projections:
