Dolphins re-sign backup quarterback Josh Freeman

The Miami Dolphins re-signed quarterback Josh Freeman on Tuesday, the team announced. Freeman originally signed with the Dolphins in April and was released last week.

Freeman remains a long shot to make Miami's 53-man roster this fall and did not do enough in the spring to push Dolphins No. 2 quarterback Matt Moore. Freeman split third-team reps with McLeod Bethel-Thompson and was inconsistent in organized activities and mandatory minicamp.

Freeman is a former first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009. He is trying to make a comeback after being out of football in 2014. Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey was part of the front office in Tampa Bay that drafted Freeman six years ago.

The Dolphins now have one open roster spot remaining before training camp. Players will report on Wednesday, and the team will hold its first practice on Thursday.
