Titans release veteran safety Michael Griffin

NFL, Tennessee Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans on Tuesday released veteran safety Michael Griffin, the team announced.

Griffin was the team's most veteran player, their first-round draft pick in 2007 out of Texas. He played in two Pro Bowls but was an up-and-down player who had tackling issues too often.

"We would like to thank Michael for all of his efforts and impact on the Titans during his nine seasons with our franchise," Titans GM Jon Robinson said in a statement. "Michael's reputation around the NFL is as a very durable player who always gives his best both on and off the field. ... We wish him all the best moving forward."

Griffin thanked the Titans on Twitter.

"I knew I had a high cap number and I am getting up there in years," Griffin said on The Midday 180 in Nashville. "As long as you're losing you start at the top and work your way down."

The Titans used Marqueston Huff, a fourth-rounder from 2014, as Griffin's backup in 2015. But the team will likely be in the market for a new free safety with the newly hired Robinson in charge of rebuilding the franchise's roster.

Griffin was scheduled to earn a $6.5 million base salary in 2016 and leaves behind a $1.8 million dead-money charge on the salary cap.

"I want to thank Griff for his time here with the organization," coach Mike Mularkey said in a statement. "He was a leader who showed up to work every day in an effort to get better, and I appreciated his effort both on and off the field for this team. He touched a lot of people in this community and in our organization. I want to wish him the best, and I hope he will always be remembered as a great Titan."
