Mets' Zack Wheeler resumes throwing after Tommy John surgery

NEW YORK -- New York Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler took a tangible step on his road to recovery Monday.

Wheeler tossed a baseball for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery. He made 15 throws to get to 60 feet, then another 15 at that distance.

He has been working out in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Wheeler underwent the elbow procedure March 25. Team doctor David Altchek reconstructed Wheeler's fully torn ulnar collateral ligament and repaired a partially torn flexor-pronator tendon.

Wheeler has estimated he will return next season in June or July.
