MLB Rumor Central: David Ortiz still intends to retire

Let the speculation begin that a $25 million contract could keep David Ortiz from retiring at the end of this year.

In an interview with Yahoo Sports, the Boston Red Sox designated hitter said he's "happy with the decision that [he] made” about retiring but added "hopefully nobody comes to me and offers $25 million, either.

"I don’t even want to talk about it," Ortiz said. "Like I said, I’m good with the decision that I made right now. But would you leave $25 million on the table? I don’t want nobody to offer me that."

Given the tone of the rest of the interview, it appears that Ortiz's comment about a $25 million deal was made in jest and that he would still walk away if the Red Sox or any other team did offer him that kind of money.

"Your body tells you [when it's time]," Ortiz said. "My body, man. My body’s pretty beat up."

It doesn't look that way on the field, as the 40-year-old is slashing .312/.391/.652 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs. The Red Sox hold a 2017 club option on Ortiz that could be worth up to $16 million based on plate appearances this season.
