Rex Ryan: Safe to say Bills don't have LeBron James at QB

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan opened his news conference Wednesday with some breaking news from the basketball world.

"This just in: LeBron's pretty good," Ryan said with a smile after stepping up to the podium. "I mean, I'm watching that -- you see, the way the rules are set up -- it's cool. [They] don't care if they got numbers, [just] throw it to LeBron. That's pretty good offense. So we're going to use that here. I don't know who to throw it to, but we're going to try to use it."

The NBA Finals digression later prompted a reporter to ask, "Who's going to be your LeBron at quarterback?"

"Well, it's safe to say that we won't have LeBron at quarterback," Ryan said. "We may have LeBron at defensive tackle and at defensive end, but we don't have him at quarterback."

Ryan made reference to his less-than-ideal quarterback situation -- both in Buffalo and previously with the New York Jets -- later in the news conference when praising center Eric Wood.

"I think Wood is right there with the top centers in the league, so I think he's one of those guys. I was blessed with the Jets to be around a great one and [Wood] is very similar to Nick [Mangold]," Ryan said. "So I think that's been a good thing.

"I know I haven't had an ideal situation at quarterback but I've had an ideal situation at center for my career and Eric is just that way."

As for LeBron and the Cleveland Cavaliers, will Ryan be making the three-hour trip down Lake Erie to watch a Finals game?

"No, no. It's not that far," he said. "Nah, when the Braves come back and Bob McAdoo is in town, I'll go back and see them."
