Dolphins' potential free-agent targets: S Reggie Nelson

The Miami Dolphins are in the process of slashing salaries in order to create cap room. In turn, they will use the cap room on free agents to upgrade their roster.

Who are some of the players that Miami could target next month? ESPN.com’s Dolphins page takes a look this week at several players who are good fits.

Next up is a Pro Bowl safety from the reigning AFC North champions:

Player: S Reggie Nelson

2015 team: Cincinnati Bengals

2015 stats: 77 tackles, eight interceptions

Analysis: On Monday we examined another Bengals starting safety, George Iloka, and his potential fit in Miami. The common thread is new Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who coached both players last year in Cincinnati and knows them well. However, Nelson is the more high-profile name coming off a league-high eight interceptions and a Pro Bowl nod last season. With that comes the possibility that Nelson, despite being 32, has a higher price tag. He is one of the top defensive playmakers on the market and a priority for the Bengals. The Dolphins still have to make significant cuts and restructures to create the necessary cap room to go for a Pro Bowler like Nelson. But if Miami decides to go top shelf, Nelson would create a dynamic pair for the Dolphins at safety alongside fellow Pro Bowler Reshad Jones.
