A 60-minute live special to center on Hispanic pride in the world of sports

For the third consecutive year, ESPN celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a television special from the award-winning platform One Nación. The special will include a first-time joint production with FUSION, the media network owned by Disney/ABC and Univision. The one-hour special, sponsored by Jack Daniels and Samsung Galaxy, will air live in a simulcast on ESPN and ESPN Deportes Wednesday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. ET. Following ESPN’s telecast, FUSION will air an additional 30-minute live One Nación broadcast at 8:00 p.m. The programs will showcase the Latino influence and pride in some of the most popular sports in the U.S.

This year, One Nación will air live from FUSION’s studios in Miami, and feature segments from the iconic Clevelander Hotel in South Beach, with a live audience of South Florida’s most avid sports fans. Co-hosted by ESPN’s Max Bretos, Antonietta “Toni” Collins and Freddy Lomeli, alongside FUSION’s soccer expert Fernando Vila, the Hispanic Heritage Month special will feature four segments showcasing in-depth profiles of renowned Hispanic athletes, followed by in-studio discussions.

The storylines include:

  • The Romos: The pride of a Mexican family – Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s grandparents – at their grandson performing in the most visible position in the most popular sport in the US, and the pride of the Mexican community by extension.
  • The Horfords: Father and son NBA players Tito and Al Horford head to the Dominican Republic.
  • Carlos Correa: First Puerto Rican to be selected first overall in MLB draft.
  • Marlene Esparza: First American female boxer to qualify in the Olympics.

In addition, Vila will host the 30-minute post-show airing exclusively on FUSION, exploring the lives of Afro-Latinos, a melting pot of races and cultures from the world, and the story of Octavio Arroyo, the Mexican baseball player stumped by his immigration status.

Recognized by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists with the NAHJ Presidential Award for Excellence, One Nación is an ESPN brand created in 2013 as a television special to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The show was the first bi-lingual, one-hour studio show to be produced for ESPN. Since then, the brand has expanded to a digital destination that integrates ESPN content relevant to the U.S. Hispanic sports fan, serving as a hub for English and Spanish-language content available across ESPN and ESPN Deportes.

In an effort to continue expanding the brand, One Nación also recently launched a bilingual podcast hosted by Bretos and Marly Rivera, ESPNDeportes.com reporter. One Nación with Max y Marly addresses topics that are relevant to the U.S. Hispanic audience while raising issues many Hispanic athletes are faced with today. The show is available online and for download via One Nación with a new episode debuting every two weeks.
