Sources: Jarrett Bush suspended 4 games

NFL, Green Bay Packers

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- If the Green Bay Packers re-sign Jarrett Bush, they will have to wait until Week 5 to put him on the field.

The veteran cornerback was suspended for the first four games of the 2015 season, two league sources confirmed Monday to ESPN. One source said the suspension was for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances.

That means the 31-year-old Bush, who currently is a free agent, was not suspended for his arrest in March, when he was charged with public intoxication in Vacaville, California. Bush was later released without any charges filed against him.

Bush's agent, Derrick Fox, did not return messages or emails seeking comment on the suspension.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said earlier this offseason that he had not closed the door a possible return by Bush, who played for the Packers from 2006 through last season, mostly as a backup and special-teams contributor. He became a free agent in March, when his three-year, $5.25 million contract expired.

Although the Packers gave away Bush's uniform No. 24 to rookie cornerback Quinten Rollins, McCarthy said in May that it didn't necessarily mean Bush's tenure with the Packers was over.

"Jarrett is a nine-year player here," McCarthy said at the time. "If he did come back to us and things worked out in the future, he'd be wearing 24. I think it's premature, frankly, that we did that. But Jarrett Bush is still a free agent."

Bush is the second member of the Packers' 2014 team to be suspended this offseason. Defensive end Datone Jones was suspended for the regular-season opener for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Defensive tackle Letroy Guion and tight end Andrew Quarless also could be suspended after their offseason arrests.
