3-point stance: Braxton Miller looking like a 3-time Big Ten MVP?

1. For nine months we debated whether Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett should start at quarterback for Ohio State, and in the end, all that matters is that one of them deliver the ball to Braxton Miller. As the rest of us felt sorry for Miller being Wally Pipped out of his starting job, Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer remembered the versatility that helped make Miller a two-time Big Ten MVP. After Monday's performance by Miller at H-back/quarterback, it is suddenly pertinent to point out no one, not even Hall of Fame tailback Archie Griffin of Ohio State, has ever won that award three times.

2. No. 25 Tennessee returned 18 starters, but the Vols remain young, especially past the first line on the depth chart. For the inexperienced, "Every situation is a new situation," head coach Butch Jones said. "There's no baseline level of play. They're creating that on every single rep. ... How do you handle that? What you did last year to prepare is not good enough. It has to be that much better." And soon, given the next opponent. "When you're playing the (No. 19) Oklahomas you know exactly where you're at," Jones said. "If you have any deficiencies, they'll be exposed."

3. Three starting quarterbacks -- Terrel Hunt of Syracuse, Jesse Ertz of Kansas State, Taysom Hill of BYU -- suffered season-ending injuries on opening weekend, and Virginia Tech's Michael Brewer's broken collarbone will keep him out for several weeks. Toss in starting tailbacks James Conner of Pitt and Tarean Folston of Notre Dame, both out for the year with knee injuries, and you wonder if more than bad luck is to blame. Most quarterbacks haven't been hit since last season, and most tailbacks aren't taken to the ground in practice. The lack of contact couldn't have a role in this, could it?
