Fifth a 'little present' for McLaren - Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso described fifth position as a "little present" for McLaren after his best result of the season at the chaotic Hungarian Grand Prix.

McLaren looked more competitive all weekend at the Hungaroring, only for reliability issues to see Alonso start in 15th. After a late safety car there was drama and incident across the field and Alonso soon found himself fifth when Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo collided, a position he kept when he held off Lewis Hamilton across the finish line.

"Unbelievable," Alonso said after the race. "I think the race was very good for us. Fifth is a little present for us in this moment where we are not super competitive. The race was chaotic in some parts of it, we took the advantages that came to us and we maximised our result."

Alonso thinks fifth is the result McLaren deserves after a tough season adjusting to life with Honda power in 2015.

"I think the team deserve this kind of result. We've been unlucky in some situations, so some of that luck came back to us today. You know the team work 24 hours a day in the factories and finally we get some result we can touch. We knew that we are improving the car, that we are getting better and better, but always you need to touch somehow and to put some points on the board. So today is the day that we need to feel proud."

Before the race, there was a poignant minute's silence to Jules Bianchi, who died last Friday from injuries he sustained at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. Alonso said it was tough to get into the car after remembering his close friend.

"It was very difficult to get into the car today after the minute of silence. It was a very emotional race, but we are 20 people doing this job and we're very privileged. He was one of us. We love this sport, we love racing, and I think the type of race we saw today is the type of race kids loves and they passionate about Formula One - as I did, as Jules did and as probably some kid saw today and will hopefully one day want to become Formula One driver one day."
