Carlos Torres lands on waivers after trade doesn't materialize

Reliever Carlos Torres has been placed on waivers by the New York Mets.

The Mets had designated Torres for assignment last Friday to clear a 40-man roster spot for the addition of Antonio Bastardo. The club then had a week to trade Torres, but did not find a sufficient return.

Torres is due to earn $1.05 million in 2016. Because he has been a capable reliever in the past and has a modest salary, it seems a logical conclusion that he will be claimed and the Mets will lose him.

Torres, 33, logged 97 innings while making 73 appearances (one start) in 2014. That heavy workload likely adversely affected Torres' performance last season. Torres went 5-6 with a 4.68 ERA in 59 relief appearances in 2015.
