Aggies need more quality depth, Kevin Sumlin says

Texas A&M is entering its fourth season in the SEC this fall and a continuous goal for coach Kevin Sumlin and his staff is building quality depth, the kind needed to compete for SEC championships.

It's a goal that hasn't quite been reached, as Sumlin looks around at his fellow leaguemates and their numbers of NFL draftees compared to Texas A&M's.

"You look at some of these programs, I’m not going to name them, but they have guys drafted in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth round," Sumlin told reporters Wednesday before a speaking engagement in Houston. "That’s where we need to be as a program."

The Aggies have had several first-round picks in recent years, with five players chosen in the first round of the draft in the past three years. The numbers drop off after that, however, as the Aggies only had five players drafted in the second through seventh rounds combined in the past three years.
