  • Seven of Top Eight Men’s Seeds Remain Alive
  • Only Two of Top 12 Women’s Seeds Remain: No. 1 Serena, No. 7 Ivanovic

On Tuesday, June 2, ESPN’s coverage of the French Open continues with two men’s and two women’s quarterfinal matches, with ESPN2 presenting live and same-day action at 1 p.m. The day’s play is highlighted by an all-Swiss matchup of No. 2 seed Roger Federer and 8 Stan Wawrinka. Also, No. 5 Kei Nishikori plays No. 14 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a favorite of the fans in Paris. On the women’s side, 2008 champion No. 7 Ana Ivanovic faces No. 19 Elina Svitolina and No. 13 Lucie Safarova plays No. 21 Garbine Muguruza.

On ESPN3, action begins at 8 a.m. featuring the Federer/Wawrinka and Safarova/Muguruza matches.

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s men’s quarterfinals, nine-time champion Rafael Nadal will face top-seeded Novak Djokovic – seeking to complete a career Grand Slam with a win on the red clay of Roland Garros. It will be their 44th meeting, the most of any rivalry in the Open Era (Nadal leads 23-20, 14-5 on clay, and 6-0 at the French Open). The other quarterfinal has No. 3 Andy Murray vs. No. 7 David Ferrer.

That day’s women’s quarterfinals is highlighted by top-seeded Serena Williams in her quest for her 20th Major championship facing No. 17 Sara Errani, the finalist in 2012. The other quarterfinal in the top half of the draw has two very big surprises: No. 23 seed Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland will square off against Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium. Neither player has before reached the quarterfinal stage of a Major event.

  • ESPN2 will air live quarterfinals Wednesday, June 3, at 8 a.m.  (ESPN3 begins at 5 a.m.)
  • ESPN will then conclude its coverage of the French Open with the women’s semifinals live on ESPN2 on Thursday, June 4, at 9 a.m. (ESPN3 begins at 5 a.m.)

Chris Fowler leads the ESPN tennis team in Paris, with Darren Cahill, seven-time French Open champ Chrissie Evert, Mary Joe Fernandez, Brad Gilbert and Patrick McEnroe.

Overall, for the second Major of the tennis year, ESPN2 will present 50 hours on television with nearly 300 more via ESPN3’s presentation of up to seven courts on the days ESPN2 is on the air.

As I write this on 11-11-21, it's now 35 years for me at ESPN, the only real job I’ve ever had. I joined merely to help with the upcoming America’s Cup in Australia. I was told it would be for three months at all of $5.50 per hour. I like to say I simply kept showing up. I’ve worked on almost every sport, plus answered viewer calls and letters (people used to write!), given tours, written the company newsletter and once drove NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon to the local airport. My travels have been varied…I’ve been to Martinsville, Darlington, Indy and Super Bowls; the America’s Cup (all 3) in San Diego and College GameDay in the sport’s meccas such as Eugene, Auburn, Lubbock, Stillwater and more; the NBA Finals, Wimbledon (16 times and counting) and the “other Bristol,” the one with a race track in Tennessee. These days, my main areas are tennis, UFC, boxing, network-wide ratings (by month/quarter/year), and corporate communications documents, including fact sheets, chronologies, lists and nearly 35 of the Year in Review press releases. UPDATE EXACTLY ONE YEAR LATER: Today, November 11, 2022, I am retiring from ESPN -- 36 years to the day I began. As I ride off into the sunset – top down and E Street Radio blaring – I do so with so many wonderful memories, proud of my contributions and a heart full of gratitude for the opportunity.
