Injuries linger as Bulls prepare for preseason opener

CHICAGO -- Fred Hoiberg's first official game as Chicago Bulls head coach on Tuesday likely will be remembered more for who isn't playing, rather than who is.

That's because the Bulls, who already were scheduled to be without Derrick Rose (fractured left orbital), Taj Gibson (ankle) and Mike Dunleavy (back), also will be playing without Pau Gasol (rest) and Kirk Hinrich (toe).

Rose remains out of commission for the next week or so as he recovers from surgery to fix an orbital fracture. After saying Saturday that Rose was expected to be back at the team's facility on Wednesday to start reviewing more film and learn the new offense, Hoiberg noted that Rose would not travel with the Bulls during their two-game trip to Boulder, Colorado, to face the Denver Nuggets on Thursday and Winnipeg, Manitoba, to face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday.

Hoiberg said he would head over to Rose's home later Monday and was hoping to meet up with Rose again Wednesday to discuss the new schemes.

"We'll probably try to get over there one more time and see him Wednesday morning," Hoiberg said. "Maybe take some game film over there and show him what we could have done, different reads, that kind of thing. I know he's chomping at the bit to get back here."

As for Gibson, Hoiberg is hoping to see the veteran power forward back on the floor soon as he continues to recover from offseason ankle surgery.

"Hopefully by the third or fourth preseason game," Hoiberg said. "He's looking better all the time, his big thing is just getting his conditioning back. He's showing explosiveness, he's getting back out there, he's excited, but he's horribly out of shape right now. So it's just about building his lungs back. You don't want him to go out there while he's doing that, maybe favoring that ankle and hurting something else.

"Again, we'll continue to take it slow, but after practice it's more about general soreness overall, as opposed to ankle soreness. That's a great sign."

Hoiberg said Hinrich went through Monday's practice but will sit Tuesday as he deals with a lingering toe injury. Gasol seems optimistic about health, but wants to ease back into the grind of the NBA season after leading Spain to the EuroBasket championship last month.

"He was on board with it," Hoiberg said of the idea to rest Gasol, also noting that this will probably be the only preseason game Gasol is scheduled to miss. "He said he had six days after the [EuroBasket] championships where he just didn't do much of anything. So I think he was ready to get back on the floor and start slowly working himself back into shape. He's in the scrimmages, just the first couple we just played about three minutes. Now we're working that up. But you'll see him start getting back out [into] full-time action once we go on this road trip. Again, we'll start it slow. Maybe not full time right away, maybe 15 minutes [in first preseason games]."

Hoiberg said he expects to start E'Twaun Moore, Jimmy Butler, Tony Snell, Nikola Mirotic and Joakim Noah Tuesday against the Bucks.
