Tommy John Repeat Surgeries
Outside the Lines (Sunday, 9 a.m. ET, ESPN; 10 a.m. ESPN2; 11 a.m., noon ESPNEWS)

Of 31 Tommy John surgeries in 2014, 11 were repeats – a huge jump

Star pitchers Matt Harvey and Stephen Strasburg have reaped the benefits of Tommy John surgery, the procedure which has saved many pitching careers since it was first performed on John in 1974. Yet numbers suggest that there is a good chance a player will need the surgery at least a second time. In 2014, 11 of the 31 pitchers who had Tommy John surgery were revisions, or repeat procedures, and in some cases, pitchers have had third procedures. Stan Conte, vice president of medical services for the Los Angeles Dodgers, says, “We’ve seen as many revisions from 2012 through 2014 as we had in the entire prior decade.” Sunday’s OTL discusses the increase in repeat Tommy John procedures. Host Bob Ley is joined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, Sports Medicine Surgeon and team physician for the LA Dodgers.

Liam Dwyer: Drive
SportsCenter (Sunday 11 a.m., ESPN; throughout the day)

Staff Sergeant Liam Dwyer doesn’t drive at the highest level of the sport, but he has answered his country’s highest calling — twice serving in combat as a Marine, twice being wounded. After being told he would never be able to drive a manual shift car again, Dwyer used the prognosis as motivation to get back to his passion for racing cars and a successful return to the track. Tom Rinaldi has this SC Featured story.

“Racing cars for me gives me that adrenaline release that I need, that I crave, that I got when I was in country, either in Iraq, or Afghanistan.” – Liam Dywer
