Meet the Detroit Lions free agents: RB Reggie Bush

Every day we’ll take a look at one of the Detroit Lions heading for free agency, what he has meant to the team and a prognosis on whether or not he’ll be back with the club in 2015. Previous free agents profiled are here.

Free agent to be: Reggie Bush

Position: Running back

Age: 30

Years in the league: 9

What he made last season: Bush had his contract restructured to help the Lions with their salary cap, so he made $855,000 in base salary and ended up with $3,504,900 in cash for 2014. His cap number in 2014 was $2,949,018.

What he did last season: Bush struggled through the 2014 season as he dealt with ankle injuries that never seemed to go away. He missed five regular-season games because of the injuries and was limited in at least two others. General manager Martin Mayhew also said he played hurt in the playoff game against Dallas. Between the regular season and playoffs, Bush had 84 carries for 334 yards and three touchdowns and 43 receptions for 263 yards. He also dropped three passes this season – a better rate than his 2013 production.

His potential market value: Not high. Bush is still a name player, but his production will not make him a high-priority free agent considering some of the younger, more productive options out there. A team will eventually sign Bush, but he isn’t the high-level catch that he was when the Lions nabbed him in free agency in 2013.

Will he fit the Lions: No. The Lions cut him last month and there are no indications he will return.

What happens: Some teams will likely look at Bush, who showed he could still be valuable as a piece of a running/receiving attack when healthy. He probably would have to take the lowest salary of his career as there are definite health/production questions at this point.
