Breaking down the Darryl Tapp and Dan Orlovsky contracts

As the Detroit Lions continue to try to make some bigger free agent moves after failing to retain their top target, Ndamukong Suh, some more of their smaller contracts are starting to come through.

Two of the free agents the Lions signed last week -- quarterback Dan Orlovsky and defensive end Darryl Tapp -- signed one-year deals to return to Detroit.

Orlovsky's deal was for $970,000 in base salary with an $80,000 signing bonus and $60,000 of his base salary fully guaranteed. It means he'll make $1.05 million in cash in 2015, but only have a cap charge of $665,000. It also guarantees that if the Lions were to get rid of Orlovsky, he will get at least $140,000. Orlovsky did not throw a pass last season for Detroit.

Tapp's deal was for $870,000 with an $80,000 signing bonus -- equaling $950,000 in cash and a $665,000 cap charge. Unlike Orlovsky, none of Tapp's base salary was guaranteed. He had 19 tackles and 1.5 sacks last season as a rotational defensive end and part-time defensive tackle.
