Ga. Tech to allow bitcoin at games

Georgia Tech fans won't need to hit the ATM to pay for snacks and drinks at games soon, as the school reached a deal to become the first college program to use bitcoin for concessions sales.

The school announced the agreement Wednesday with BitPay, a bitcoin processing company. It will allow fans to purchase concessions in the student section at Bobby Dodd Stadium using the Internet currency beginning with Saturday night's game against Miami.

Students on campus also will be able to use bitcoin for dining and shopping on campus.

"We look forward to working with BitPay to make bitcoin a viable payment option for our students and fans," Georgia Tech athletic director Mike Bobinski said in a statement released by the school. "At Georgia Tech, we are always looking to lead in innovative ways, and this partnership with BitPay gives us an opportunity to do so by integrating this new technology at a sports venue and in the daily lives of our students."

In July, BitPay and Georgia Tech's athletic association announced a partnership designed to build awareness of bitcoin through the 2014-15 school year. Bitcoin is an open-source software-based online payment system, according to its website, and it has gained international attention over the past few years, including an agreement with the NBA's Sacramento Kings that will allow its use in their home arena.
