A very early projection of the Detroit Lions' roster on offense

The draft is over. The Detroit Lions have not even announced all of their undrafted free agents yet, but it’s time to take a very early guess at what the team’s roster might look like in the fall.

This is obviously going to be very fluid and things could change -- beginning this weekend at rookie minicamp. But as of now, here is one man’s guess at what Detroit’s 53-man roster will look like on offense.

We’ll look at defense/special teams Wednesday morning.

QUARTERBACK (3):

Starter: Matthew Stafford

Backups (in projected depth-chart order for now): Dan Orlovsky, Kellen Moore, Anthony Boone

Thoughts: This is a pretty stabilized position. Stafford is the entrenched starter and no one is beating him out. Orlovsky is the veteran backup and Moore is the likely No. 3 quarterback. Moore has a better chance this season to pass Orlovsky on the depth chart, but much like last season, I would not expect Jim Caldwell to go into a season with only one quarterback with regular-season NFL experience. Boone is this year’s James Franklin.

Roster locks: Stafford

If picking the roster today, these guys would be on it: Stafford, Orlovsky, Moore.

RUNNING BACK (4):

Starter: Joique Bell

Backups: Ameer Abdullah, Theo Riddick, George Winn, Zach Zenner, Rasheed Williams (reported by Detroit Free Press).

Thoughts: After Bell and Abdullah, this is wide open. Riddick should be on the roster and will have a role, but what that might be is in question right now after the Lions essentially drafted a more versatile version of him. Winn is in a heavy roster battle with the two undrafted free agents. Zenner is intriguing because he’s a three-time 2,000-yard rusher at South Dakota State and could have position flexibility as a fullback at 5-foot-11, 223 pounds.

Roster locks: Bell, Abdullah

If picking the roster today, these guys would be on it: Bell, Abdullah, Riddick, Zenner.

FULLBACK (1):

Starter: Michael Burton

Backups: Emil Igwenagu

Thoughts: Not much. The Lions used a fifth-round pick on Burton, so he isn’t going anywhere.

Roster locks: Burton

If picking the roster today, these guys would be on it: Burton.

WIDE RECEIVER (6):

Starters: Calvin Johnson; Golden Tate

Backups: Corey Fuller, Ryan Broyles, Jeremy Ross, TJ Jones, Andrew Peacock, Skye Dawson, Vernon Johnson, Marcus Beaurem (per Detroit Free Press)

Thoughts: This is a competitive group right now after Johnson and Tate. Every player beyond those two has at least one major question mark -- from injury to production to athleticism. Of the group, Fuller and Peacock have the most promise. Jones, if he’s healthy, could make a push as well. Much like last season, this group might have more fluidity than any other one on the roster.

Roster locks: Johnson, Tate.

If picking the roster today, these guys would be on it: Johnson, Tate, Fuller, Broyles, Jones, Peacock.

TIGHT END (3):

Starter: Brandon Pettigrew

Backups: Eric Ebron, Joseph Fauria, Jordan Thompson, Casey Pierce.

Thoughts: Not much to say here. Barring injury or a major surprise from Pierce and, less likely, Thompson, this group is set. Detroit knows what it has here and likely won’t make any changes here until after the 2015 season.

Roster locks: Pettigrew, Ebron

If picking the roster today, these guys would be on it: Pettigrew, Ebron, Fauria.

OFFENSIVE TACKLE (4*):

Starters: Riley Reiff (LT), LaAdrian Waddle (RT)

Backups: Cornelius Lucas, Michael Williams, Corey Robinson.

Thoughts: There are some questions here, mostly because of Waddle’s knee injury and the rehab from that. That’s why the star is up there. For now -- and this could definitely change based on what happens during offseason workouts -- Waddle is going to be on PUP, so Lucas slides in here. Williams and Robinson will be an interesting depth competition. If Waddle is not on PUP, I stick with four linemen here and give Williams the edge over Robinson.

Roster locks: Reiff, Waddle, Lucas

If picking the roster today, these guys would be on it: Reiff, Waddle (PUP), Lucas, Williams, Robinson.

INTERIOR LINEMEN (4):

Starters: Laken Tomlinson (LG), Manny Ramirez (OC), Larry Warford (RG).

Backups: Travis Swanson, Darren Keyton, Taylor Boggs, Braxston Cave, Al Bond (per Detroit Free Press), Torrian Wilson (per Detroit Free Press).

Thoughts: The top four are pretty locked in. The only question is if Ramirez or Swanson starts at center. After that, it is about whether the Lions want to keep a fifth interior lineman. None of the current guys have the inside/outside flexibility Garrett Reynolds had a season ago, which means they are not as valuable. The Lions might be willing to go shorthanded here, although Keyton or Boggs could make a push for a roster spot. This is a spot where a minimum-salary veteran could appear.

Roster locks: Tomlinson, Ramirez, Warford, Swanson.

If picking the roster today, these guys would be on it: Tomlinson, Ramirez, Warford, Swanson.
