Where Lions stand on offense entering free agency

The Detroit Lions are about 24 hours from the official start of the league year and while the franchise has not made any big moves in the pre-free agency period, they do have holes to fill on their roster.

While the largest gaps are on defense, the Lions have many areas that need upgrades – so here’s a look at what the Lions offense looks like heading into free agency.

Quarterback: Starter – Matthew Stafford. Backups – Dan Orlovsky; Kellen Moore.

Thoughts: The Lions aren’t making any more moves here. If they add another quarterback, it will be during the draft or a UDFA.

Running back: Starter – Joique Bell. Backups – Theo Riddick; George Winn; Emil Igwenagu (FB).

Thoughts: The Lions might make a move here – C.J. Spiller is a rumored target – but between the draft and free agency, Detroit will add at least one more running back and maybe two. Stevan Ridley could be a cheap candidate coming off injury, although he doesn’t have the return capability of Spiller.

Wide receiver: Starters – Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate. Backups –Ryan Broyles; TJ Jones; Jeremy Ross; Corey Fuller; Skye Dawson; Andrew Peacock.

Thoughts: The need for a true third receiver – and possibly a returner – is high. This seems like a more likely solution in the draft, where there will be plenty of options for younger players with fresher legs.

Tight end: Starter – TBD. Candidates to start – Brandon Pettigrew, Eric Ebron, Joseph Fauria. Backup – Jordan Thompson.

Thoughts: No need to draft or sign a free agent here. The Lions will roll with the investments they have unless someone gets hurt. Next year could be a big season for movement as Pettigrew won’t have guarantees on his contract and Fauria is a restricted free agent.

Offensive tackle: Starters –Riley Reiff (LT); LaAdrian Waddle (RT). Backups – Cornelius Lucas, Michael Williams.

Thoughts: There could easily be an addition here through free agency – or more likely the draft. This would give the Lions flexibility to move Reiff if they want. A cheap veteran could be the move as well, but a player like Cameron Erving in the draft would be very intriguing to Detroit. Watch the development of Williams, too.

Interior linemen: Starters – TBD (LG); Travis Swanson (C); Larry Warford (RG). Backups – Rodney Austin, Taylor Boggs, Darren Keyton, Braxston Cave.

Thoughts: The Lions need to make a veteran free agent signing here, be it the return of Rob Sims or another player on the market. The Lions need a veteran on the line to offer some experience since right now Reiff would be the most-tenured NFL lineman the Lions have. This is where a Sims re-signing coupled with a high-to-mid level draft pick would make sense. Clint Boling could be an intriguing choice here since he’s young (25) and graded out pretty well by Pro Football Focus as a run blocker.
