Breaking down Rashean Mathis' contract with Lions

The Detroit Lions re-signed cornerback Rashean Mathis last week, and details of his contract are out according to ESPN Stats & Information.

As part of his two-year deal, he received a $750,000 signing bonus and also had $750,000 of his contract guaranteed. In 2015, Mathis will have the highest cap hit of any cornerback on the Lions at $1.625 million. That'll be $1 million in base salary for him, a $750,000 proration each year due to the signing bonus and guaranteed money. He'll make $2 million in cash in 2015.

Also in 2015, he has a roster bonus of $15,625 per game that he is on the 46-man active roster with a cap of $250,000.

In 2016, Mathis will have a cap hit of $1.875 million. His numbers break down as $1 million in base salary, a $750,000 proration on the signing bonus/guaranteed money. He'll get $1.5 million in cash in 2016. He would also have a roster bonus of $500,000 due the fifth day of the 2016 league year, so a decision on his 2016 status will be made quickly.

Mathis and Darius Slay will both count over $1 million against the cap in 2015. In addition to Mathis' number, Slay has a cap number of $1,442,537 in 2015. Mathis, Slay and Nevin Lawson are the three cornerbacks under contract for 2016. Besides Mathis, Slay would cap count $1,682,960 in 2016 and Lawson $675,146.
