The first 53: The Packers' initial roster

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The roster that the Green Bay Packers put together after Saturday's final cuts is by no means final.

It might even change before Thursday's regular-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks with the possibility of waiver claims and free-agent activity, but here's a look at the way things stand coming out of the preseason:

Quarterbacks (3)

Aaron Rodgers

Matt Flynn

Scott Tolzien

Note: It's the first time since 2008 that general manager Ted Thompson has kept three quarterbacks coming out of training camp. Think Rodgers' collarbone injury last season had something to do with that?

Running backs (4)

Eddie Lacy

James Starks

DuJuan Harris

John Kuhn

Note: The Packers have kept no fewer than five backs to open each of the past three seasons. Look for another running back to join the practice squad.

Receivers (5)

Jordy Nelson

Randall Cobb

Jarrett Boykin

Davante Adams

Jeff Janis

Note: You have to wonder whether they would have kept six if rookie Jared Abbrederis had not torn his ACL.

Tight ends (4)

Richard Rodgers

Brandon Bostick

Andrew Quarless

Ryan Taylor

Note: Rodgers, a rookie third-round pick, looks like the starter, especially if Bostick's leg injury keeps him out for the opener.

Offensive linemen (8)

David Bakhtiari

Josh Sitton

Corey Linsley

T.J. Lang

Bryan Bulaga

Derek Sherrod

Lane Taylor

JC Tretter

Note: Tretter's knee injury could keep him out for another month or longer. The Packers can play him on injured reserve with the designation to return, but he would not be able to play for eight weeks.

Defensive line (5)

Mike Daniels

Letroy Guion

Datone Jones

Josh Boyd

Mike Pennel

Note: One guaranteed roster player (B.J. Raji) and another likely one (rookie Khyri Thornton) landed on injured reserve, leaving the Packers light at this spot. However, outside linebackers Mike Neal and Julius Peppers can play on the line.

Linebackers (11)

Clay Matthews

Julius Peppers

A.J. Hawk

Brad Jones

Mike Neal

Nick Perry

Jayrone Elliott

Andy Mulumba

Sam Barrington

Jamari Lattimore

Carl Bradford

Note: This spot is heavy at outside linebacker, but perhaps the rookie Bradford can play inside. If so, he'd be the fifth inside linebacker behind Hawk, Jones, Barrington and Lattimore.

Cornerbacks (6)

Sam Shields

Tramon Williams

Casey Hayward

Davon House

Jarrett Bush

Demetri Goodson

Note: The surprise here was Goodson over Jumal Rolle. Perhaps the tiebreaker was that Goodson is a draft pick (sixth round). However, it's possible the Packers are waiting for his concussion to clear up so they can waive him and bring him back to the practice squad. You can't waive an injured player without a settlement.

Safety (4)

Morgan Burnett

Micah Hyde

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Sean Richardson

Note: Another surprise was not keeping Chris Banjo, who looked like a top-flight special-teams player.

Specialists (3)

Mason Crosby, K

Tim Masthay, P

Brett Goode, LS

Note: No surprises here.
