UW adds another QB to the competition

Washington might be getting a little help -- or at the very least, another warm body -- to bolster the quarterback competition.

The team announced Tuesday that Tony Rodriguez, a junior college transfer from City College of San Francisco, has signed a financial aid agreement and will be eligible immediately as a true junior in 2015.

Rodriguez will enter a competition that includes junior Jeff Lindquist, redshirt freshman K.J. Carta-Samuels and true freshman Jake Browning. Junior Cyler Miles, last year’s starter, is still on indefinite leave and it’s not known if he plans to return to the team.

Adam Jude of the Seattle Times spoke with Rodriguez’s coach at CCSF, Jimmy Collins, who had high praise for his former quarterback.

"The concerns most would have bringing in a quarterback in the summer is, will he be able to learn enough of the offense to have a legitimate chance to compete?" Collins said. "If any guy can do it, it's Tony. He retains information as well as any player I've been round. He comes off the field understanding what he just saw; he's not out there in the blind making decisions."

Washington coach Chris Petersen said he expects Rodriguez to provide an “immediate boost” to Washington’s quarterback corps.

The 6-3, 185-pound Rodriguez threw 18 touchdowns and four interceptions last season.

"You watch his clips online and, yeah, it’s impressive,"Collins told Jude. "But when you work with him and really understand the offense and understand the decisions he was making, he was a 'wow' for us.

"He's probably the biggest steal at any position out of junior college this summer. We really think that highly of him."
