Detroit Lions re-sign linebacker Josh Bynes

While the big news of the first afternoon of free agency surrounded the Detroit Lions picking up Haloti Ngata from Baltimore, the Lions also made another deal with a former Ravens player Tuesday afternoon.

The Lions re-signed linebacker Josh Bynes, who the team picked up off Baltimore's practice squad after the third week of the 2014 season, according to his agent. Like Ngata, Bynes is a player who won a Super Bowl with the Ravens and understands the scheme defensive coordinator Teryl Austin is trying to run with the Lions. Money terms were not disclosed on Bynes' two-year deal, but Detroit declined to offer Bynes a tendered contract as a restricted free agent.

That left Bynes as an unrestricted free agent, but he quickly re-signed with the Lions.

Bynes had 19 tackles last season as a rotational middle linebacker behind Tahir Whitehead, who was replacing the injured Stephen Tulloch. Tulloch is expected to return healthy next season to his middle linebacker slot, meaning Bynes and Whitehead will likely be competing for time behind Tulloch. Bynes' re-signing also creates a mass of linebackers for Detroit, with Tulloch, Whitehead, DeAndre Levy, Kyle Van Noy, Julian Stanford and Travis Lewis under contract as linebackers who were with the Lions' 53-man roster last season.

In his career, Bynes has played in 39 games with 91 tackles and one interception.
