Detroit Lions bring in two players for pre-draft visits

For the second time in a week, the Detroit Lions brought in a defensive back from the Pac-12 for a pre-draft visit.

The Lions played host to Oregon State cornerback Steven Nelson on Tuesday, less than a week after Stanford cornerback Alex Carter visited the team’s facility.

The 5-foot-10, 197-pound Nelson started for two seasons for the Beavers. He had 122 tackles, 24 passes defended, eight interceptions, and one interception return for a touchdown.

Nelson is the No. 9 cornerback and No. 75 overall prospect according to ESPN.com/Scouts Inc. and is rated with above average instincts/recognition and in run support. He’s rated as average in cover skills and ball skills.

At the combine, Nelson ran a 4.49-second 40-yard dash, put up 19 reps on the bench press, had a 34.5-inch vertical jump and a 115-inch broad jump. He did the three-cone drill in 6.88 seconds, the 20-yard shuttle in 4.07 seconds, and the 60-yard shuttle in 11.52 seconds.

Prior to Oregon State, Nelson spent two seasons at the College of the Sequoias, a junior college in California, where he had 71 tackles, 19 pass breakups and six interceptions.

Detroit also brought in Jordan Phillips, a defensive tackle from Oklahoma, for a pre-draft visit Tuesday.

Phillips, who measured at 6-foot-5 and 329 pounds at the NFL combine, is a player who could play in a 4-3 or 3-4 if necessary. He ran 5.17 seconds in the 40-yard dash and put up 28 reps on the bench press. He had a 30-inch vertical jump and a 105-inch broad jump. He had a 7.88-second three-cone rill and a 4.68-second 20-yard shuttle.

Phillips had 58 tackles in his three years at Oklahoma with nine tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He had a back injury that required surgery and cost him most of his 2013 season. When he injured the back, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops told ESPN.com’s Brandon Chatmon that it was an injury that "bothered him for the last couple years" and wasn’t "one specific injury." It could be imperative for the Lions to inquire about Phillips with a pre-draft visit to check out the back.

Phillips is rated as the No. 5 defensive tackle prospect and No. 40 overall prospect by ESPN.com/Scouts Inc. He is rated as above average against the run, with average quickness and below average pass-rush skills and toughness/motor in his ESPN/Scouts Inc. profile.

He is the third defensive tackle to visit the Lions, along with Mario Edwards Jr. (Florida State) and Xavier Cooper (Washington State).
