Trial date set for former Lion Titus Young

Former Detroit Lions receiver Titus Young's battery case will go to trial this month in Los Angeles.

The trial date was set during a pre-trial hearing Thursday. UPDATE: There is another pre-trial hearing on April 1 with a jury trial start date set to tentatively begin April 14 at the Compton Courthouse.

Young was initially arrested and charged on July 9, 2014, and was alleged to have committed one felony count of battery with serious bodily injury, and four misdemeanor counts of battery on school, park, or hospital property. One of the misdemeanor counts was dropped in a prior hearing, so his trial will pertain to four counts: the one felony count and three misdemeanor counts.

If Young is found guilty, California Penal Code says each misdemeanor could come with a fine of $2,000 or less and up to one year in jail. The felony count could mean up to four years in jail, according to the penal code.

When Young was arrested, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department released a statement explaining the situation.

"The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to a battery call on the 12000 South Wilmington Boulevard in Los Angeles at around 3:40 p.m. on July 8 (2014) as Young was involved in "a physical altercation with another male adult," the LASD said in the news release. Young was booked the next day.

The 12000 block of South Wilmington Boulevard is where the Los Angeles County King-Drew medical center is located.

Young, 24, has been in trouble with the law often the past few years. He was arrested twice in one day on May 5, 2013 -- for driving under the influence in Riverside County, California, and again for trying to steal his car from the towing yard.

He was also charged with four felonies and seven misdemeanors from a burglary in Orange County, California, in 2013.

Young played two seasons for the Lions after being drafted with the No. 44 overall pick in 2011 out of Boise State. He played in 27 games, including the Lions' 2011 playoff game, with 85 catches for 1,023 yards and 10 touchdowns.
