Report: Lions work out Mare, Medlock

David Akers missed a short field goal on Thanksgiving against the Green Bay Packers and even though Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz said he had confidence in the veteran after the game, the team apparently wanted to look around anyway.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions worked out veteran Olindo Mare and Justin Medlock on Monday.

Mare was with the Chicago Bears for three games this season, making 6 of 8 field goals but did not attempt any kick more than 50 yards. In his career, he is just 15-of-33 from 50 yards or longer.

Medlock hasn't had much of a shot in the NFL, kicking for one game for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2007 and 10 with the Carolina Panthers last season. He is 8-of-12 on field goals in his career.

Akers, meanwhile has made 81 percent of his field goals in his career and is 15-of-20 this season. In his NFL career, he is 24-of-45 in the regular season on field goals of 50 yards or more and 1-of-2 in the playoffs.

The 75 percent rate on made field goals is tied for 28th in the NFL, which isn't a good thing. While he is 2-of-2 on 50-plus yard field goals, his 3-of-6 ratio on field goals from 40-49 yards is tied with Kai Forbath and Rob Bironas for worst in the league.

It would be at least a little bit surprising to see Detroit make this move at this point, mostly because with the Lions playing well this season, one would think they would want a kicker with playoff experience. Mare has that. Medlock does not. That said, Akers is clearly on notice that his job isn't 100 percent safe.

Akers is 38-of-44 in 22 playoff games. He has really had only one rough postseason game -- when he went 1-of-3 in the 2010 playoffs for the Eagles, missing from 41 and 34 yards. This was a week before his daughter had a malignant cyst removed over her left ovary.
