Huntingdon, Tenn.’s Carroll Academy girls high school basketball team has not won a game since 2005 – a streak of 213 straight losses. A day-treatment facility with an educational component, Carroll Academy uses sports to help kids stay in school and out of state custody, teaching them that even losing games can help them win later in life.

“Our job is to help them get up the ladder. They got to climb the rest of the way, but we’ve got to give them a boost. Through sports, you grow up if it’s done right.” — Randy Hatch, Carroll Academy Senior Administrator/Girls Head Basketball Coach

“It was very important, because I never had a dad growing up. He didn’t just teach us basketball, he taught us life lessons through basketball. He taught us so much.” – HayleyCarroll Academy Basketball Player on Coach Hatch’s influence

Rare Rider
Outside the Lines (Friday, 3 p.m., ESPN)

Saturday at Churchill Downs, Kevin Krigger will become just the second African-American jockey to ride in the Kentucky Derby since 1921. As Krigger prepares to mount Goldencents, the Santa Anita Derby winner co-owned by Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino, T.J. Quinn reports on some of the challenges black jockeys continue to face.

“In other sports, there were options: Negro Leagues in baseball, barnstorming teams in other sports. But with jockeys, there were no other options in America.” — Ronnie Driestadthistorian, author and outreach educator at the Kentucky Derby Museum

“I’m going to make myself be remembered as one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, African-American jockeys that ever sat on a race horse.” Kevin Krigger, Goldencents’ jockey
