Detroit Lions begin to put together futures deals

The Detroit Lions, as all NFL teams are, have started putting together their futures/reserves contracts to help bolster their roster to 90 players.

While a lot of the Lions’ practice squad players will likely end up with futures deals, the team will also look outside the practice squad to fill out the roster.

Here’s a look at who the Lions have signed to futures deals so far with brief bios.

WR/TE Ifeanyi Momah: The former Boston College receiver was briefly with the Lions' practice squad this season when the team was dealing with injuries to Eric Ebron, Brandon Pettigrew and Joseph Fauria. He has previously spent time with Philadelphia and Cleveland before joining the Lions earlier this year for a brief spell. His 6-foot-7 size makes him an intriguing prospect.

C Braxston Cave (announced by him on Twitter): Yet another Notre Dame player for the Lions, he was a third-team All-American his senior year with the Irish in 2012. Since then, the 6-foot-3, 305-pound lineman has bounced around the NFL to Cleveland, New England and Washington. His NFL.com analysis from the draft listed strengths and his intelligence, strength and run blocking. The weaknesses were his athleticism, size and recovery.

C/G Taylor Boggs (announced by his agents): He spent the 2011 season on injured reserve with the Jets and then spent the past two seasons with Chicago between the team's practice squad and active roster, where he played five games before being released in October. At 6-foot-3, 285 pounds, Boggs was undrafted out of Humboldt State.

DE Kerry Hyder Jr. (announced by his agent): He was on the practice squad of the New York Jets last season after going undrafted out of Texas Tech. The 6-foot-2, 280-pound Hyder was second-team All-Big 12 in 2013, when he had 65 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. According to his Texas Tech bio, his cousin is former Lions cornerback Chris Houston.

UPDATE: The Lions also signed OT Michael Williams, WR Skye Dawson, LB Jerrell Harris, FB Emil Igwenagu, S Nate Ness, WR Andrew Peacock, DT Roy Philon, DT Xavier Proctor and TE Jordan Thompson to futures deals. All were on Detroit's practice squad at the end of the season.
